About Scar Revision
Scars are a very commonly occurring skin flaw that can exist anywhere along the body. A scar is often a reminder of a wound that once existed or another condition that caused a disruption to the skin’s surface. While most scars are not a concern, some scars can be unappealing and unsightly to those who possess them. They can be too big, too wide, bumpy, dark, raised, or recessed. Depending on where the scar is located and its condition, scar revision surgery may be required to improve the appearance. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kirk Moore offers scar revision surgery at his Midvale, UT practice, Just The Right Curves. The goal of this cosmetic treatment is to help reduce the size and improve the appearance of your scar.
Types of Scars
There are several different types of scars. The kind of scar you have will determine which technique will be most adequate to treat it. The most common scars that Dr. Moore treats are:
- Superficial Scars
These are the subtlest type of scars. They do not cause any issue other than an unsightly appearance.
- Keloid Scars
These scars are larger in size and can be sometimes painful. The skin around the scar tends to be discolored and extends beyond the edges of where the wound once existed.
- Hypertrophic Scars
This type of scar can also be large. They tend to be thicker and grow over time; however, they do not typically extend beyond the wound site.
- Contracture Scars
This type of scar is considered more complex than the others because it forms over a greater area of skin. A burn is an example of this type of scar. Many times, a contracture scar feels tight and can impair movement for some patients.

"I'm 1 day post breast-aug surgery and can't believe how incredible this experience has been! I was in at noon, out by 1:30, then out carpooling tots by 6pm, and out to dinner with friends by 8pm last night.Did stretches every hour, as directed by the doc and it mostly just feels like I've had a good pectoral workout. Advil and Tylenol this morning, and I'm up, showered, dressed and back to work today with full energy, and a fresh set of pretty breasts. (A little swollen still, looks like I could nurse 1000 baby kittens, but that'll subside with time). What a fantastic experience this has been from start to finish. My only regret? That I didn't do it 10 years ago. Dr. Moore has eighty-two thumbs up from this girl. Whod've guessed surgery could be so seamless? Thanks Just the Right Curves!"- B.L. / Google / Jan 31, 2019

Men, women, and children who possess a scar that is bothersome, unsightly, or causes insecurity and embarrassment may consider undergoing a scar revision treatment. It is important for candidates at Just The Right Curves who get this procedure to understand this: while this treatment is designed to improve the appearance of the scar and reduce its size, it will not make any scar disappear completely. The type of procedure performed will be based on where your scar is located, what type of scar it is, and the depth, size, and shape.
Surgery to revise scars is usually performed within our AAAASF-accredited surgical facility. Dr. Moore will use a local anesthetic or sedation, depending on the complexity of the case. For thick or bumpy scars, a shave excision can be performed to level and even out the scar. Scars that are larger and raised may be reduced in size using an elliptical incision, which removes the scar and some of the tissue and skin around it. The skin is then re-sutured with a thin, clean line. For scars that exist due to poor closure, this can be a big improvement. Large scars or contracture scars sometimes will require a skin graft or tissue expansion so that the old scar can be removed, allowing healthy skin to be reconnected. In some cases, it’s not the size or shape of the scar that is bothersome but rather the color and texture. There are some great laser treatments that can lessen the color and visibility of a scar, eliminating the need for surgery. If you have a recessed scar or one that appears "pitted," Dr. Moore may recommend a filler product to create a fuller, even surface.
What to Expect
After a scar revision treatment, wound care is the most important aspect of the healing process. Dr. Kirk Moore or a member of his staff will provide very specific instructions to help you take care of your incision so that the new scar is thinner, lighter, and smaller. As mentioned, the scar cannot be completely erased, but most scar revision treatments can create a natural, softer appearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does scar revision cost?
Your scar revision treatment pricing will depend on several factors, such as the type of scar and the size or shape of the scar. At your initial visit, Dr. Moore can give you an estimated cost for your scar revision. Just The Right Curves accepts many payment methods. Our team can also help you find medical financing if needed.
Does scar revision eliminate the original scar?
Post-surgical care is vital for the outcome of your scar revision procedure. Following your treatment, it is important that you adhere to the recovery regimen that Dr. Moore gives you. This includes taking any medications prescribed and caring for your wounds so that they heal smoothly, resulting in a less visible scar. Although a mark will still exist, many patients report a vast improvement in the appearance of their scar. It typically takes around six months for your results to be fully noticeable.
Are there nonsurgical options for scar revision?
Scars that appear concave or depressed could benefit from an injectable filler to add volume to the affected area. There are many fillers and technologies available on the cosmetic market today that could be considered as part of your scar revision treatment plan. During your consultation, Dr. Moore will go over various options for your treatment, whether you decide on scar revision or a nonsurgical technique.
Can scar revision be combined with another procedure?
Yes. Scar revision can be combined with an array of procedures, such as an injectable filler or laser skin resurfacing. Laser treatments could be especially ideal if you’re concerned with problems, like hyperpigmentation and rough scar texture. During your consultation, it is important to discuss all of your issues with Dr. Moore so he can properly tailor a detailed treatment plan to address your scar.
Does scar revision hurt?
Because a form of sedation is typically used during the procedure, patients report experiencing little to no discomfort during treatment. After your scar revision, however, you may feel some soreness, itching, swelling, and redness for a few days.
